Far too often I hear and yes, even say, “Now is not the right time, I’ll wait until……. (fill in with any excuse you can imagine)”. The most popular excuses that I use and hear are waiting until you have more free time (will never happen), waiting until you have more money (also not going to happen, no one gets rich by waiting!)or the worst saying of all “you have to have money to make money”.
Look back at yourself a year ago, do you feel like you have more time now then you did a year ago? My guess is no, but it’s still a very popular excuse that many of us mindlessly throw out there to make us feel better about our inaction. Humans take on more and more as time goes on, there will rarely be a time in life where you are going to be less busy a year from now. The fact is no one has enough time to really do anything, they make the time. There is some rule out there (I can’t think of the name of it, and I don’t have time to look it up. Ha Ha) but it says that no matter how much time you have you will always fill that time with something, making you always feel busy. Very similar to how no one will ever have enough money, you know… no matter how much more money you make you still need more.
So you have kids, animals, wives, husbands, parents and they are always taking up all your time there’s no way you have time to do anything else. I’m not saying to cut off time with any of the people previously mentioned, but you might have to compromise your sleep schedule and MAKE time to get things done. Cutting sleep is just the easiest example I can think of, there are many more ways I’m sure of. I know I know… you can’t function if you stay up a whole extra 2 hours or something… blah blah, more excuses! Drink an extra cup of coffee or energy drink, I promise, you will probably survive. Besides, more and more studies coming about are showing that 8 hours of sleep is too much anyway, look it up. The fact is there is time all around us, we just have to figure out how to make that time we are currently not using into a productive time. What are you doing on your work lunch breaks? How about an hour or two before you go to work? If you can put 20 more minutes per day towards your dreams then you are now, well that’s better than sitting on your ass and going nowhere during those 20 minutes right?
My personal favorite excuse for why I’ve gotten nothing done has always been that I don’t have the money to do it. While it is no joke that I am for sure broke, seriously i just checked. I have $160.00 in my checking account and i don’t have a savings account or any other kind of account. So there is some full disclosure there for you I literally have $160 to my name. If you’ve read the “About” section of this site then you’ll know that i am not currently a successful person. I’m not writing this blog from a past tense because I’ve already been through all the things I’m writing about, I’m writing this blog in the present tense because i plan to write and maintain this blog as i go along. So right now I’m hoping that this story ends successfully but i honestly have no idea what’s going to happen but it will all be documented here giving you a chance to follow along. The hope is to inspire and motivate a few people on the way, including myself. Anyways, back to the no money excuse and why it shouldn’t be used! I know it’s cliche but there are certain VERY successful people out there who actually started from poverty. One that immediately comes to mind is Oprah, she really started with nothing and now she is the most influential women in the world. Oprah obviously wasn’t sitting on her ass whining how broke she was? JK Rowling, the creator of the Harry Potter empire was on welfare before she became known. Howard Schultz CEO of Starbucks came from the projects of Brooklyn before he became known.
The point is that with a dump truck full of heart and probably a lot of sweat, blood and tears you can go after what it is you want regardless of financial standing. The goal i am after right now is to start a media company, I would like to specialize in marketing for business. Producing short Youtube or Vimeo videos for clients or even taking photographs that they request is the specialty I’d like to get to. I’m starting from rock bottom, but i am STARTING. Even with $160 in my bank account i have gone out and gotten myself a DSLR camera as i plan on going after a very cinematic look in my videos. I’ve also gotten multiple pieces of equipment i will need to begin making my videos. There are still other pieces of equipment I must get to start making professional type videos and those pieces of equipment cost upwards of $500, so what am i going to do? I’ll tell you, I’m going to make as many of the pieces of equipment I possibly can! Youtube is a great resource, i’ve found plans to everything I’ll need to get started and I will spend a tenth of what I would if i went out and bought it all. It may not be glamorous but it doesn’t have to be, the point is I’m getting started and moving towards my goal. Oh and since i am fully disclosing everything, some of you are probably wondering how i bought an expensive camera with $160 to my name. The camera i got was a $650.00 camera and its fully financed currently with no interest.
Starting with no money is a great way to learn how to use every possible resource you can find. I can’t just go around and buy everything i need, everything will have to be done by me. If I, of all people can slowly start moving towards something then everyone and anyone else can. So until the next time just Go and DO DO DO DO!!
